Jackal Retro, also known as Top Gunner, is an overhead run-and-gun shooter game. In this game, players take control of an armed jeep and must navigate through enemy territory to rescue prisoners of war (POWs).
The game centers around the Jackal Squad, an elite group of soldiers who have undergone rigorous training to survive in any environment. Their mission is to drive the armed jeep into hostile territory and extract the POWs.
The game begins with a transport helicopter dropping the jeep onto the enemy coast. The main objective is to infiltrate the enemy's main headquarters and destroy their ultimate weapon. Along the way, players will encounter numerous internment camps where the POWs are held. Rescuing prisoners held in solitary camps will upgrade the jeep's grenade/missile launcher by one level.
Players must collect prisoners and drive them to the nearest heliport, where an extraction chopper awaits to retrieve them. Extracting prisoners in succession will earn players more points. Successfully reaching the target number of prisoners in a row will upgrade the jeep's missile launcher to the next level. The mission takes players through various environments such as ancient ruins, lakes, hills, and mountains before reaching the enemy headquarters.
While the jeep can run over foot soldiers, it can be destroyed by enemy projectiles or colliding with enemy vehicles. When a player's jeep is destroyed, they are able to watch for a replacement one. The game ends when players complete the mission or run out of replacement jeeps. A map displayed on the game over screen shows the player's progress.
